A low-pressure area or a cyclonic disturbance has formed over Lakshadweep and the Arabian Sea, which will gradually turn into a cyclonic storm by Sunday (16 May). The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy rains in parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat in view of the rapid increase of cyclone weakening.
The cyclonic storm over the Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep will focus on the same region until Saturday morning and intensify into a cyclonic storm on Sunday, causing heavy rains in the southern parts of the country.
“This [cyclonic formation] is very likely to turn into a deep depression during the next 12 hours and into a cyclonic storm [Cyclone Touktae] during the next 12 hours. It is likely to intensify. There is a lot of potential for it to move initially. Towards north-north-east by this evening. It will then move north-northwest and reach the Gujarat coast by the morning of May 18, ”IMD says.
